Monthly Recap: October
Month four is in the books!
Happy Halloween Subscribers - it has been a busy month of news at every level and we are very excited for the next few months at The Lantern!
Opinion & Nonprofit Laws
We had a lot of interest in Letters to the Editor and Opinion pieces this month as the School Board election ramped up. When we obtained our 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit the legal guidance we received is to not endorse or publish endorsements of candidates - even nonpartisan candidates. However, we can weigh-in on ballot issues because that is classified as issue advocacy and not seen as benefitting candidates for elected office.
I am happy to be proven wrong about that restriction. It is also worth knowing that we will publish every side of an opinion issue if people submit pieces from opposing angles.
If you want to write an opinion piece checkout our submission guidelines.
Recommendations
I want to recommend Roxborough’s own Sandi Ault and her Substack: Reporting from the WILD. Sandi is an author and community advocate, she also is one of the leaders of “Our Democracy Collective” and I highly recommend this video they made with state Rep. Lorena Garcia discussing ballot measures LL & MM.
There is a lot of overlap between The Lantern and Red County, Blue State audiences but make sure you listen to this episode with Julie Gooden discussing Bonds and MLOs. I dare you not to learn something.
